    Long Beach's annual winter homeless shelter will open Saturday, Dec. 8, in the former North Neighborhood Library Branch, 5571 Orange Ave. The library, which also housed the winter shelter in 2017, became a convenient spot for the program after its operations moved in 2016 to the new Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library a few blocks away. After the winter shelter closes on March 31, 2019, the building will be demolished, and the property will be used to build affordable housing.
