The man was biking westbound in the third lane of Spring Street on Wednesday, Nov. 7, when he was rear ended near the 605 freeway by a driver in a 2007 Honda Accord, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department.

For Brinkley, his induction in the same year of his retirement speaks volumes about his 32-year tenure at Newport Harbor, which averaged one CIF championship game every four years with him at the helm. Under Brinkley, the Sailors won three CIF titles and compiled a 244-130-3 record.
