    A deeply divided group addressed the Ukiah City Council Wednesday about the possibility of extending the winter homeless shelter for another month. On one side there were neighbors fed up with a sharp increase in vandalism, loitering and other disruptive activities, and on the other were citizens concerned about the welfare of those being housed at the shelter each night.

    The City of Ukiah fire marshal is recommending that the winter homeless shelter currently operating on Mazzoni Street not be allowed to stay open another 30 days due to safety concerns. “I will not approve an extension request without significant improvements to the building in question,” Kevin Jennings, Ukiah Valley Fire Authority Division Chief and Ukiah's Fire Marshal, wrote in a report to the Ukiah City Council regarding a request by the Mendocino County AIDS and Viral Hepatitis Network to keep the shelter open through April instead of closing at the end of March.

    At its next meeting, the Ukiah City Council is expected to discuss the possibility of extending the length of time the emergency winter shelter will be open by 30 days. “I am asking the council to consider keeping the shelter open for five months instead of four,” Don Popowski told the board, explaining that the information he gleaned from the National Weather Service is that the rain is expected to be “above average” in April as well.

    Police and deputies associated with the Drug Abuse Reduction Task Force served a warrant on a W. Wyoming Ave. apartment. Agents found an ounce and a half of heroin, 23 grams of cocaine, two .40 caliber Glock handguns, equipped with 30 round high-capacity magazines, and a .32 caliber revolver.

    A man was arrested after police found an ounce and a half of heroin and 23 grams of cocaine during a drug raid of a Lockland apartment. The Drug Abuse Reduction Task Force raided an apartment on W. Wyoming Ave. that police said was used specifically for distribution and sales of illegal narcotics.
