    Chisago County has worn its reputation for being known as 'solar capital of Minnesota' proudly, but the glow has worn-off for a group of landowners in the south end of the county. Approximately 25 to 30 citizens attended what ended up being a two-hour sit down with zoning officials and County Commissioner Rick Greene last week, to air concerns over proliferating solar array sites.

    Two proposed new ordinances had their first reading at the Nov. 28 Chisago City Council meeting with public hearings set for Jan. 23. The first ordinance would establish a three percent lodging tax to help fund a tourism bureau under the Chisago Lakes Chamber of Commerce. Other communities in the Chisago Lakes School District also have been asked to support the tax.

    North Branch council opened the public hearing last week on potentially enacting a franchise fee on energy customers in the city and just one person spoke. Derek Green's concern was inflation of the fee-- he mainly wanted some kind of guarantee in the ordinance it couldn't be increased at-will by elected officials in the future, and get out-of-control.

    Lindstrom City Council and in fact, many local councils, hold "workshops" periodically which is an informal meeting format, allowing staff and elected officials to devote time on one or two issues to be picked apart and discussed more so than a regular 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. meeting agenda allows.     One person reportedly died in a fire in Berglund Mobile Home Park, west of Lofton Avenue and just north of Hwy 8. Firefighters were called to the scene about 2 a.m. Thursday morning. Lakes Area Police Chief Bill Schlumbohm reports the patrol had gotten the call and discovered the burning trailer home was endangering another home nearby.

    The America's Best Communities contest gave legs to an economic revitalization plan developed by the group competing in the national competition-- except for the proposed lodging tax, which is still in-limbo. The lodging tax in the ABC contest outline was going to be collected by the city where each lodging business is located, at three percent.

    The man arrested for shooting at a stranded motorist, trying to free a car from the ditch late at night, on Herberg Road outside of Taylors Falls, in December 2016 was sentenced in district court November 6. Friday, November 17, 2017 October 29 Lakes Area Police took report called in about 1:30 a.m. of an alleged assault at Smitty's in Chisago City. Apparent victim needed medical attention for "bleeding from face" and went to Fairview Medical Center-- meanwhile authorities learned the victim had a warrant outstanding.

    The man arrested for shooting at a stranded motorist, trying to free a car from the ditch late at night, on Herberg Road outside of Taylors Falls, in December 2016 was sentenced in district court November 6. Tony James Vondelinde pled guilty to one count of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He will serve 120 days in jail, with a 36 month jail term stayed for seven years.
