    Liberty, Ind. - Rodger C. Abernathy, 71, formerly of Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at his home in Winter Springs, FL.. Rodger was born on September 1, 1943, to Robert and Ruth Steins Abernathy in Union County. He was raised in Union County and graduated from College Corner High School in 1961. He received his graduate and undergraduate degrees from Purdue University before joining the Air Force in 1966. In 1971, he joined WR Grace and lived in Chelmsford, MA, where he was an active member of the community and participant in Jaycees. In 1991, Abernathy moved to Pine Bluff, AR to work with Strong-Lite products before retiring in 1996 and returning to Liberty. In 1998, he and his wife retired to Winter Springs. Rodger is survived by his wife, Jane, three sons: Gary, Brett and Brian; a brother: Harold Abernathy of Liberty; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ruth Steins Abernathy, and his brothers Richard and Gerald. A public graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M on Monday, May 11, 2015, at Sims Cemetery (Franklin County) where Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 122 and VFW Post # 1472 of Liberty. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association at https://donate.heart.org.     Liberty, Ind. - Judy L. Carmack Cole, 69, of Liberty, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Sycamore Springs Rehab Center in Liberty. Judy was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on December 19, 1945, to Abe and Etta Hurst Carmack and lived most of her life in Union County. In her primary school years she attended Billingsville School and then graduated from College Corner High School in 1963. Judy married Gerald Cole on May 3, 1985.In addition to being employed as office manager at Liberty Mills from 1962 to 1994; Judy worked as an Amish Taxi Driver, at Brewbaker Grain and Chemical, and in Amway. Judy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Laurel and enjoyed spending time with her family. Judy is survived by her son: James Loudermilk and his wife Jami of Hamilton; a brother: George Carmack and his wife Beverly of Liberty; a brother-in-law: Carl Sharp Sr. of Liberty; a sister-in-law: Peggy Carmack of Liberty; two grandchildren: Blake and Siera; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Donald Hertel. Judy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died May 4, 2004; three brothers: Allen, Robert, and Archie Carmack; and a sister Ethel Sharp. Funeral service will conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11th, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty, with Rev. David Jordan of the Laurel First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in College Corner Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. Monday until time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Ethel Sharp Scholarship Fund at the Union County Foundation.     Liberty, Ind. - Betty Jane (Manrod) Spaeth, 89, of Liberty died Monday, March 23, 2015 at her residence. Betty was born October 13, 1925, to John and Mildred (Greenwood) Manrod near Oxford Ohio. She was raised in the Oxford area and graduated from McGuffey High School in 1943. On June 25, 1943, Betty married the love of her life, Daniel L. Spaeth, in Hamilton, Ohio. Soon after their marriage, they moved to Indiana and farmed all their lives in Franklin and Union Counties until retirement. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together. Betty worked for many years at the Liberty Department Store and always enjoyed visiting with her many friends in the community. She was very talented with knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Over the years, Betty made many sweaters, afghans, and other gifts. She also taught and helped others with needlework. Betty loved to read and would read several books each month. She was a longtime member of Edwards Memorial United Methodist Church. Betty is survived by two children: Barbara (Bruce) Creek of Remington, IN and Dennis Edward Spaeth of Liberty. Betty was also blessed with five grandsons: Kyle, Clint, and Will Spaeth, Scott and Brent Creek; and two granddaughters: Annette (Keith) Miiller and Janet (Kevin) Sweet. Betty also enjoyed her ten great-grandchildren: Kent, Grant, and Alaina Miiller, Chase, Paige, Claire, and Ella Creek, and Clark, Wade, and Jack Sweet. Her family was very important to her and gave her much joy. She is also survived by two sisters: Patricia Cook and Connie Beamon; and one brother, John Manrod; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Daniel, who died February 3, 1994, Betty was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters: Alice Ross, Dorothy Thomas, Elnora Transier, Reba McCreadie, and infant Bonnie; and a son-in--law, Bruce Creek. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27th at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty with Rev. Scott Bell of Edwards United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Darrtown Cemetery in Darrtown, OH. Friends may visit at the funeral on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to Union County High School Special Needs Class.     Liberty, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Hallmark Healthcare Center in Summerville, South Carolina. Martha was one of thirteen children of her parents, William A. and Louisa Minton Carmon. She was born in Tazewell, Tennessee, on March 15, 1923. She worked as an inspector at Alcoa and retired in 1979. Estelle was a member of Meadowlane Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School Class for many years, played the organ, and sung at local nursing homes with her husband Kermit. Estelle also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and decorating. Estelle is survived by five stepchildren: Beth Kaiser of Bethlehem, NH, James H. Lawhorn of Greenback, TN, Oliver Lawhorn of Summerville, SC, Ruby Roberts of Indianapolis, IN, and Patricia Click of Liberty, IN; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Estelle was preceded in death by husbands James H. Lawhorn and Kermit Cornett; and seven brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty with Rev James Lawhorn officiating. He had a personal relationship with God and enjoyed reading and learning about U.S. History. He took particular interest in the Civil War visiting many battle sites and collecting memorabilia. He continued his education at IU East earning a degree in political science in 1992. He enjoyed his great nieces and nephews, watching football and taking trips to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Survivors include his mother, Barbara Wood and her longtime companion, James Collins and family of Middletown, Indiana; sister, Sue Luellen; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wayne and Becky Warren of Hilton Head, South Carolina; three nieces, Darra (husband Howard) Moore of Seymour, Indiana, Tiffany (husband Paul) Hilderbrand of Rockton, Illinois, Bridgette (husband Patrick) Dobbs of Alexandria, Indiana, seven great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Grover Wood, wife Joanna Hunt Wood and his grandparents. Public graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (March 18, 2015) in Lutherania Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.
