    Casimir “Caz” Szlendak died earlier this month in Northern California, thousands of miles away from where he grew up in St. Mary's, but his frequent returns to the land of his childhood nurtured its growth and development, and put a historic home in good hands. Szlendak, 70, was born in a slave labor camp in Germany during World War II, according to an obituary, and he later emigrated to the United States with his parents and two siblings, including a sister who continues to live in Lexington Park.

Rodney O'Neal Runnels Jr., 27, of Lexington Park eventually was released on 10 percent of $7,500 bond to await a court hearing on charges including committing a second-degree assault on Stephen Gore Uhler II, and a charge of child neglect.

    A judge ordered Wednesday that Kevin Benjamin Berry, 28, of Lexington Park remain in jail without bond on charging papers alleging he fired multiple pistol rounds into a home during a fight in the Westbury neighborhood, endangering the community. Berry was arrested at the scene after Monday's incident on charges of reckless endangerment, the illegal possession of oxycodone, firearms violations and a first-degree assault on Terrance Marquis Savoy, according to a statement of probable cause filed by St. Mary's sheriff's deputy Austin Schultz.

St. Mary's sheriff's narcotics investigators witnessed Amanda Arlene Parsley purchasing suspected heroin from Jones last Thursday near the intersection of Route 235 and Hermanville Road, according to charging papers also alleging that Parsley and Destiny Dawn Hudson “began to prepare the heroin for use” when Parsley got back into a motor vehicle.
