In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by: siblings, Linda K. Cherry, on Nov. 4, 2000, Robin J. Newman, on Nov. 23, 2000, and Brian Thomas is survived by: his loving wife, Sally Newman, whom he married June 21, 1980; children, Bethani Kanagy and husband, Vaughn, of Belleville, and Gabriel Newman and wife, Ashley, of Milroy; nine grandchildren, Caleb, Brianna, Elijah, Leah, Myah, Sarah, Lilly, Kensley and Annie; and siblings, Nancy Sowich and husband, William, of Reedsville, Vickie Kauffman and husband, David, of Lewistown, and Barry Newman and wife, Penny, of Long Beach, Miss.

Several years after high school graduation, he enlisted and served in the Army from 1948 to 1955 with the 714th Tank Battalion and later as a radio operator with the 5th Field Artillery Group, Fort Bragg, during the Korean Conflict.
