    A 46-year-old Lewes man was shot during a confrontation with New Jersey police at a service area on the New Jersey Turnpike March 30. New Jersey State Police were conducting an undercover drug investigation at the Molly Pitcher Service Area in Cranbury, N.J., shortly before 3 p.m. when a trooper spotted Christopher Angelo Pizzichetta using heroin in a pickup truck at the north end of the parking lot, according to a press release from the New Jersey Attorney General's Office. Five troopers in four unmarked police vehicles conducting the investigation began to drive toward the truck in an effort to observe Pizzichetta, at which time Pizzichetta drove away and parked in a remote area at the south end of the parking lot.

    The man - recently identified as Jacob Slater, 21, of Lewes - was using a chop saw at 1 p.m. to cut open a waste oil tank at Delmarva Petroleum, located in the 9000 block of Clendaniel Pond Road, Lincoln, when sparks from the saw ignited vapors from the tank, said Harry Miller, chief deputy state fire marshal. The sparks caused an explosion and flash fire that gave the Slater second- and third-degree burns on 80 percent of his body, said Sharon Slater, Jacob's mother.
