    Kim Kevin Kershner, 51, of Lehighton, was charged Friday with inappropriately touching a girl when living in Polk Township with her family between 2015, when she was 12, and 2017, when she was 14. Kershner was placed in Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 bail and is awaiting a district court hearing. On Nov. 21, Carbon County Children And Youth Services contacted state police about suspected child abuse and neglect involving the girl.

    A man fired a gun at a 42-year-old man Sunday in Monroe County, hitting the victim in the leg, state police at Lehighton said. Kristel Wheaton, 33, of Kresgeville was charged with getting him the gun, knowing he was not allowed to possess one, police said.

    St. Luke's University Health Network and Blue Mountain Health System officially have become one after clearing regulatory hurdles in December, St. Luke's said in a news release Tuesday. Effective Dec. 31, Gnaden Huetten Hospital in Lehighton and Palmerton Hospital became part of the larger St. Luke's network, which now includes nine hospitals and nearly 300 outpatient sites in 10 Pennsylvania and New Jersey counties, the release noted.

    The incident began as a routine traffic stop on Wednesday, when a Pennsylvania state trooper from the Lehighton barracks observed a black Ford F150 crossing the double yellow lines traveling east on Kunkletown Road, according to a police report. A stop was made, and the trooper identified the driver of the F150 as David Shanahan, 57. A search of police records showed that Shanahan had an arrest warrant for a probation violation with an initial offense of felony robbery with violent tendencies.

The association already had a program in place with some Carbon County police departments and the sheriff's department and would be willing to expand that to include other interested departments through a Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency program supplying first responders with the drug that reverses overdoses.

    Rescue personnel from Jim Thorpe, Nesquehoning, and Lehighton fire departments and other units received a call about 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening that a kayaker had fallen into the Lehigh River in the area of Glen Onoko Falls. The kayaker was eventually spotted by the people in his party sitting out in the middle of the river on an island.
