    The Walker Fire is now 81 percent contained and giving out minimal smoke, although Eastern Sierra skies are exceptionally smoky this Monday morning, Aug. 24, due to the influx of smoke from the Rough Fire burning near Hume Lake on the west side of the Sierra crest. Improved conditions on the Walker Fire have allow the campgrounds in Lower Lee Vining Canyon to once again open to the public, with the exception of Aspen Grove, and fire fighting personnel has dropped from about 500 firefighters working at the peak of the fire's activity to about 216 today.

Aaron Browne, age 44, of Meadow Vista, Calif., and Payton Ware, age 33, of Elk Grove, Calif., presented media credentials that aroused the suspicions of the incident management staff at the Walker Fire ICP.

    The Walker Fire almost doubled in size since Sunday, growing to about 3,700 acres and triggering the closure of the Tioga Pass Road/S.R. 120 West from its junction with U.S. 395 until at least noon tomorrow, Aug. 18. Yosemite National Park and Yosemite Valley are not closed and can still be accessed today via west side routes into the park and via the Sonora Pass Road/S.R. 108 but there is no access into the park from the Eastern Sierra at this time according to fire officials today, Aug. 17. All campers in all campgrounds in Lee Vining canyon have now also been evacuated. The Saddlebag Lake area is also under mandatory evacuation orders.

There are about 400 personnel assigned to the fire, which broke out Friday evening near Walker Lake, a popular recreation area for fishing and hiking, Deb Schweizer, a public affairs officer with Inyo National Forest, said in a phone interview.
