    The Walker Fire is now 81 percent contained and giving out minimal smoke, although Eastern Sierra skies are exceptionally smoky this Monday morning, Aug. 24, due to the influx of smoke from the Rough Fire burning near Hume Lake on the west side of the Sierra crest. Improved conditions on the Walker Fire have allow the campgrounds in Lower Lee Vining Canyon to once again open to the public, with the exception of Aspen Grove, and fire fighting personnel has dropped from about 500 firefighters working at the peak of the fire's activity to about 216 today.

    Smoke from the Walker Fire buring north of Mammoth and smoke from the Rough Fire burning southwest of Mammoth will continue to affect the region this weekend, although there will also be clear days and hours, depending on where the wind is originating. The Walker Fire was at 50 percent containment last night, Aug. 20 and the Code Red Alert for possible evacuations for June Lake and Lee Vining was lifted but the fire is still very smoky.

    On Monday at approximately 4:30 p.m, Mono County Sheriff's Office deputies assigned to the Walker Fire Incident responded to the Incident Command Post in Lee Vining regarding two suspicious males claiming to be media representatives wanting to cover the fire. Aaron Browne, age 44, of Meadow Vista, Calif., and Payton Ware, age 33, of Elk Grove, Calif., presented media credentials that aroused the suspicions of the incident management staff at the Walker Fire ICP.

    In one more sign that the Walker Fire is coming under control, the Code Red Emergency Alert notice issued for Lee Vining and everything north of Double Eagle in June Lake for possible evacuation orders after the Walker Fire looked like it could pose a threat to the communities earlier this week has been lifted. Campgrounds in the Lower Lee Vining Canyon will remain closed through the weekend.

    The Walker Fire is burning approximately two miles southwest of Lee Vining and remained at 3,715 acres as of Aug. 19. The fire was at about 45 percent contained as of the Aug. 19 evening update. Crews continue to improve containment lines as well as mop up, which includes extinguishing hot spots to ensure that the fire does not re-ignite.
