    On June 22, about 26 sheriff's deputies from Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity and Lake counties assisted by five California National Guard vehicles, a helicopter and Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens entered the lawless heart of the Emerald Triangle to conduct a 4 day operation. The task force seized more than 86,000 plants, tons of processed marijuana, many pounds of hash bricks, 25 weapons and a lot of ammunition and but not much cash from the Island Mountain grows.

    Riders galloped and kids scrambled across the arena last weekend at the 66th Annual Beef Barbecue and Rodeo hosted by the Willits Horsemen's Association, participating in a number of events from team roping to steer daubing, and for the kids, a chicken scramble. A crowd filled the bleachers, despite the toasty temperatures, at the Rodeo Grand Entry, to watch the final event, on Sunday, June 7. A gymkhana, in which riders race in patterns, took place June 6. Also on Sunday was a session of Jackpot Team Roping and a beef barbecue.

    Shara Cumins, 25, from Rohnert Park, was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla south on Hwy. 101 on June 8 when the vehicle, for unknown reasons, crashed into a guard rail, a tree, and ended up 60 feet down a dirt embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol .

    A Willits woman was arrested June 4 on suspicion of embezzling more than $450,000 from Long Valley Market, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office. Christine K. Kelsay, 33, of Willits, was arrested following a 4 month investigation by detectives from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office and the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office.

    Representatives from the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board came to Mendocino County last Friday, May 8, to give a presentation on the new regulatory scheme that will attempt, for the first time, to enforce environmental regulations for the marijuana industry on the North Coast. About 50 people, about evenly split between greybeards and the younger generation of growers, attended the event which was held in the Laytonville Grange, and organized by Mendocino Chair of the Emerald Growers Association Casey O'Neill and Mai Nguyen a Ukiah Valley grain farmer.

    Willits and Laytonville students participated in a lively discussion on drug and alcohol use with health professionals and other community members on April 8. Small group discussions and other agenda items were planned for the Avenues to Wellness event, but got thrown out when earnest conversation took place between the youth and the audience. Willits City Councilman Ron Orenstein said, during introductions, he was looking forward to the conversation moderated by Tina Tyler-O'Shea, and was glad it was happening.
