The revisions were made "as a sort of compromise" and to try to accommodate all of the parties interested in the issue, said Councilwoman Laura Lanese, chairwoman of the safety committee. As originally drafted, the measure would prohibit pet stores or other retail or commercial establishments from selling a pet unless the animal was obtained from a city or county animal shelter or animal-control agency, a humane society or nonprofit rescue organization.
