    Local residents can celebrate America's Independence with two exciting nights of racing and fireworks happening at Ukiah and Lakeport Speedways Independence Day weekend. Thanks to the generous contributions from Kelseyville Lumber, Lake County Tribal Health, Friedman's Home Improvement and Mendo Lake Credit Union, with support from Furia Construction, Max 93.5 FM, 94.5 Kwine, and Bicoastal Media fireworks will be taking place at dusk at the Lakeport Speedway, Saturday, July 1, and at Ukiah Speedway on Sunday, July 2. Engines will be revving Saturday in Lakeport for the Kelseyville Lumber Deake Lyndall Memorial Race.

    For faithful followers of all things musical at Mendocino College, May 2017 represents a huge change: Les Pfutzenreuter, chairman of the Music Department, is retiring after 32 years teaching, and Denise Beckler, who has been the accompanist for Les' productions and events for 25 years, is also retiring. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Pfutzenreuter has been conductor of Ukiah Symphony Orchestra and Masterworks Chorale since coming to Ukiah.

    After two delayed races, the weather finally cooperated and the 2017 Ukiah and Lakeport Speedway racing season got under way. The first race of the 2017 season saw some exciting racing action at Lakeport Speedway on Saturday, April 29. Classes featured were the Taco Bell Bombers, S&K Automotive Midgets, T&T Towing Jalopies, Jammers and Limited Modifieds.

    After much discussion and negotiations, the Lake County Board of Supervisors has approved the Lakeport Sprint Boat Grand Prix scheduled to take place adjacent to Library Park in Lakeport. The inaugural Speedboat Racing event around a tri oval course will be happening on June 3 and 4. Event Organizer Jack Long has spent considerable time making sure that the event meets the specifications of local Police, Fire, Water Boards, Supervisors and City Officials.

    North Coast Opportunities, which is currently recruiting workers for its free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, expects to help more residents of Lake and Mendocino counties to file their taxes this year than in the past by offering a more convenient “drop-off” alternative to its traditional in-person services, said Kayla Harrison, an NCO program assistant. NCO's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program this year will allow filers to leave their documents with volunteers, who can then prepare clients' filings outside the rigid timetable of scheduled appointments.
