    A plan to build 200-plus homes near Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan received preliminary approval from the Muskegon Planning Commission, much to the dismay of area residents who are opposed to the development. Planning commissioners approved a preliminary planned unit development for The Docks project between the two lakes in the Bluffton Neighborhood at a public hearing on Thursday, Oct. 11. Now, the PUD will go back to the project's developer, MiCoast, for revisions before it comes back to the Planning Commission for final approval.

    Joel Heeringa of St. Joseph caught the hybrid sunfish in Lake Anne in Grand Mere State Park in Berrien County on July 9. The record fish, which Heeringa caught while still-fishing with a crawler, weighed 1.8 pounds and measured 11.7 inches. The fish beats the previous hybrid sunfish state record held by two fish: one caught May 28, 1988, by Daniel Manville on Arbutus Lake in Grand Traverse County and one caught June 1, 1988, by Lloyd Jarman, Jr. on Doan's Lake in Allegan County.
