    A La Conner man was arrested late Saturday on car theft and other charges when a Bellingham Police officer noticed that the license plates on his car matched a stolen car report, officials said. Joseph Gustave Whitefield, 36, was being held Monday in Whatcom County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to online jail records.

    Jordan Hanssen says he's doesn't use the word resurrection lightly, but he can't think of a better word to describe the story of the tall ship where he'll spend the next month. The 72-foot topsail schooner named Dirigo II was hidden away for its protection during World War II, it sailed twice around the word, it nearly sank in Mexico, it won races and it was once found rotting away in La Conner, Hanssen said.
