    A federal court issued an order today allowing the state to resume the transfer of three public hospitals on Maui and Lanai to Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, after temporarily blocking the transition last month. Kaiser, the state's largest health maintenance organization, was scheduled to assume control of Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital & Clinic and Lanai Community Hospital on July 1. But the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on May 17 blocked the plan to consider claims from the United Public Workers union that its members would be hurt by the change.

State Department of Land and Natural Resources officials are looking for a man who might have placed rocks on Mauna Kea Access Road on May 16. The rocks were placed at the 5.5-mile marker of the summit road and created a potential safety hazard because they were on the downhill lane, DLNR officials said in a news release.

    A 65-year-old man using a shop vacuum to remove fuel from a power generator started a fire that destroyed his home in Kula today, Maui firefighters said. The man was removing the fuel from the generator outside his home on Keanuhea Place in Keokea about 8:10 a.m. when the fuel ignited and the fire spread to the rest of his home, said a Maui Fire Department spokesman.

    A 48-year-old Kula man died Saturday after crashing a motorycle in a single motor vehicle incident on Maui. Police identified the victim as Robert Phillips Jr. and said he was riding an orange Enduro KTM motorcycle southbound on Lower Kula Road when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed left of center, and crashed into a utility pole on the opposite shoulder.
