    Salmon harvest around the state have been sharply curtailed this year from Copper River to Chignik, where the worst run measured since statehood has led to restrictions in neighboring fisheries to allow as much passage as possible to meet escapement goals. A tough sockeye salmon commercial fishing season is shaping up in the Gulf of Alaska, from the Copper River across to Kodiak Island and back to the mainland at Chignik.

    An Alaska law firm is leading local and national environmental groups in a lawsuit to stop a land transfer approved by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke that would allow for a road to be built through the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge. Attorneys for Trustees for Alaska filed suit against Zinke Wednesday in the U.S. District Court of Alaska, just nine days after he signed an agreement with King Cove Corp. that would allow the Alaska Peninsula Native village corporation to trade up to 500 acres of its land for an equal-value chunk of the Izembek Wildlife Refuge - enough refuge land to build a 12-mile, single-lane road on.

    Alaska's congressional delegation celebrated another victory enabled by the Trump administration Monday when the Republicans revealed the details of a land swap allowing construction of a road out of the remote village of King Cove near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The land exchange between the Interior Department and King Cove Corp., the area Native village corporation, will provide a 12-mile right-of-way through a portion of the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.

    The Anchorage Assembly voted Oct. 24 to rename the Port of Anchorage as the Port of Alaska in a move to emphasize the importance of the infrastructure to the entire state rather than just its largest city. Corroding piles and decades of damage from Cook Inlet ice have weakened Terminal 1, where this past summer a 57,000-pound fender fell off the dock while a cruise ship was in port.
