    A public meeting to discuss salmon management policies for the Kalama and Washougal rivers will begin at 6 p.m. July 30 at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2108 Grand Blvd. State officials want to talk with anglers and other about ways to implement hatchery reforms to support recovery of wild salmon and steelhead returning to both rivers. A refurbished fish-handling facility installed recently near Modrow Bridge on the Kalama River will play a significant role, said Cindy LeFleur, regional fish program manager.

    State officials have received at least partial funding to fix the fish barrier at Kalama Falls Hatchery, a prerequisite to resuming the recycling of hatchery summer steelhead in the popular Cowlitz County stream. Eric Kinne, hatchery reform coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in Southwest Washington, said his agency has gotten money from the federal Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund to renovate the barrier, which has proven ineffective at stopping hatchery steelhead from reaching spawning grounds used by wild fish.

    A public meeting to explain changes designed to reduce the number of hatchery-origin summer steelhead in the upper Kalama River will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2108 Grand Blvd. State fishery managers are taking several actions to reduce hatchery steelhead from reaching the spawning grounds, where they can interbreed or compete with wild steelhead protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. Biologist John Weinheimer of the Department of Fish and Wildlife said significant numbers of fish have been observed in recent years jumping over the aging concrete structure, which is supposed to channel those fish back to Kalama Falls Hatchery.
