    Williams-Grand Canyon News PHOENIX - The five-member Arizona Game and Fish Commission and 10 former commissioners sent a letter to President Barack Obama, Jan. 15 urging that he not designate 1.7 million acres in northern Arizona as a new Grand Canyon Watershed National Monument. Calling the proposed monument a solution to a non-existing problem, the commissioners said designating this large swath of land as a national monument could impose unnecessary rules and regulations, negatively impact outdoor recreation, and compromise the Arizona Game and Fish Department's ability to manage and conserve wildlife.

    Environmental groups have the legal right to challenge the failure of the U.S. Forest Service to restrict the use of lead ammunition, a federal appeals court ruled Jan. 12. In a brief opinion, the three-judge panel said the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club and the Grand Canyon Wildlands Council had shown a link between the use of lead ammo by hunters and the poisoning of endangered California condors. More to the point, the judges said that group members provided enough evidence that they are personally being harmed because of the use of the ammunition.

    U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service special agents and Arizona Game and Fish Department law enforcement personnel are investigating the lethal shooting of an endangered California condor that occurred on the Kaibab Plateau in northern Arizona Oct. 8. The shooting was immediately self-reported to AZGFD, which did the preliminary investigation. The case has now been turned over to FWS law enforcement for further investigation.

    Forest staff would also like to remind residents that the 2015 personal use firewood cutting season will end Nov. 30. Oct. 17 through Dec. 13, the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center at Jacob Lake will operate on reduced hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends only. Wood cutting permits are still available to purchase for the 2015 season at the North Kaibab Ranger District office located at 430 S. Main St., Fredonia, AZ 86022, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
