    Voters will get to decide the future of a new school for the students of Kachemak Selo in the fall. The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly unanimously approved an ordinance to send a proposal to the October ballot asking voters to take on $5.45 million of general obligation bonds to pay for a new school building in the Russian Old Believer village of Kachemak Selo.

    The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly passed its fiscal year 2019 budget at its Tuesdasy meeting, with a slight increase to school funding and a mill rate increase. The budget includes about $50.39 million in local support to the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, about $650,000 more than the funding the borough provided last year.

    An alert neighbor and a quick response from firefighters at about 6 p.m. Sunday saved two East End Road houses from being destroyed by a wind driven wildfire. Kachemak Emergency Services, Alaska Division of Forestry, Homer Volunteer Fire Department and Anchor Point Emergency Services all went to the 2.1-acre fire in the woods behind four homes between Yukon Street and Greer Road on the north side of East End Road near Mile 9. A resident of the area, Jack Allen, noticed black smoke, called 911 and began attacking the flames with a garden hose.

    Kenai Peninsula Borough voters may be asked this fall to take on several million dollars in bond debt to pay for a new school in the remote Russian Old Believer community of Kachemak-Selo. The approximately 50 students at the K-12 school in Kachemak-Selo, operated by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, use three older buildings - one is converted home - that have long needed repair or replacement.

    Burned trees are shown at the scene of a wildfire in Nikolaevsk, near Ninilchik, on May 15. Killed by invasive beetles, the heavy trees provide potent fuel for wildfires and provide challenges for fire crews. Firefighters were called out to the scene of a 3.5-acre wildfire along Misty Lane near Anchor Point at around 1:40 p.m. Monday afternoon, only to be deployed to a second fire in Nikolaevsk a few hours later.

    The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly approved an ordinance allowing one member of the Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Service Area board and one member of the Bear Creek Fire Service Area board to be a volunteer for the service area at the same time. Prior to the ordinance's passage, volunteers were barred from serving on the boards because the boards approve the budgets for the service areas, making it a conflict of interest for the volunteers.
