    Ludowici Police Chief Robert Poppell was home Friday afternoon, after being taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital complaining of shoulder pain after his patrol car was hit by a pickup and burst into flames Thursday morning. Georgia State Trooper Robert Balkcom said Poppell was in the center turning lane on Highway 84 west of Ludowici and running the tag reader on his cruiser when a 2010 Chevy 2500 pickup, driven by James Madray, 63, of Jesup, hit Poppell's car.

    A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged with killing a 70-year-old Jesup man, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Jesse Erwin Strickland, 28, is charged with armed robbery, felony murder and malice murder in the death of Arthur G. Westberry, 70, of Jesup, Wayne County Sheriff John Carter announced in a news release issued Thursday.

    In a news release issued Wednesday night, Wayne CountySheriff John Carter and Jesup police Chief Glenn Takaki announced that the Jesup-Wayne County Criminal Investigations Task Force and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating a "possible homicide" they say occurred at 384 Highway 301 S. The release did not identify what the address is, but it matches that of Red Carpet Inn in Jesup. Jesup police officers responded to a call for service in reference to a "possible unattended death" just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to the news release.
