    The Altamaha Riverkeeper and other conservation groups filed an appeal Wednesday of a state permit that allows Rayonier Advanced Materials to continue discharging treated process water into the Altamaha River at its huge Jesup mill. Hutton Brown, a senior lawyer for GreenLaw, said the permit the Georgia Environmental Protection Division issued at the end of December should have had more stringent limits on color, odor and turbidity and, without those standards, the permit does not comply with the Clean Water Act.

    On the river known as Georgia's Little Amazon, a long-awaited permit for a Jesup mill tightens some discharges but delays addressing issues that weigh most heavily on paddlers and fishermen on the Altamaha, namely the stench and the stain from that pollution. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division issued the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit for Rayonier Advanced Materials on Dec. 29. It goes into effect March 1. "We're pleased to reach the end of this process," said Rayonier AM spokesman Russell Schweiss.
