Liz Engel Herald-Citizen Staff Monday, Jun 30, 2008 MONTEREY -- Perdue Farms will be cutting more than 75 jobs from its chicken processing plant in Monterey, the company has announced, citing a lack profitability in that sector of its production line. The associates are part of the line three operation, which helps produce individually frozen foods, said Julie DeYoung, Perdue vice president of corporate communications. A total of 76 employees were notified of the layoffs Friday during meetings held at the facility. Production of that line will end July 11. "Several months ago we made a decision to discontinue some unprofitable business, and we've not replaced that production volume, which made this decision necessary," DeYoung said. "It was a very difficult decision to make, but one we think is best for the continued success of the overall facility and associates." The cuts are not related to overall business conditions, she said, also mentioning that Perdue will be assisting its affected associates as much as possible, starting with an internal request for voluntary layoffs throughout the plant. "If there's any openings, then we'll move people into those, but anyone that we're not able to find a position for after July 11 will go on furlough," DeYoung said. "We will be assisting them in applying for unemployment benefits or looking for other employment at other Perdue locations if they're willing to relocate. And as other openings occur or we're able to move production into the plant, we will be calling these folks back based on years of service."Perdue has about 2,000 current employees at its Monterey facility. DeYoung said they will continue full operation with the eight other production lines, and that no other layoffs are planned. "This will allow us to operate the other lines at their full capacity and utilize that equipment much more efficiently," she said. "We're committed to growing the value-added business there, and we hope to operate at fully capacity in the future."
