    Two acres of field and woods were burned after machinery started a fire at the A-1 Tree Service at 3301 Old Cherry Point Road Thursday afternoon. Craven County EMS Director Stanley Kite stated the fire spread from that property, owned by Earl Temple, to a neighboring field owned by Carolina East Investments LLC. “A couple of acres were involved, a couple of homes endangered,” Kite said.

    Three people suffered minor injuries as the result of a three-car accident on U.S. 70 at Thurman Road in James City on Tuesday afternoon. According to state troopers, a burgundy Nissan Altima driven by John Paquin, 71, of Newport, was heading west on U.S. 70 when it collided with a silver Ford Taurus driven by Richard Smyer, 74, of New Bern.

    It isn't often that a newspaper article starts out telling you that it is a load of bull, but that's exactly what this one does. According to the Craven County Sheriff's Office, a call came in around 10 a.m. Thursday from a driver on U.S. 70 near James City who reported seeing a bull fall out of a trailer that was being pulled down the road.

    A man who was wanted for raping and robbing prostitutes was caught over the weekend when he was lured into a sting operation at a James City hotel. Kevin Courtney Smith, 45, of 812 Sherman Point Road in New Bern was arrested at his home on Dec. 18 by the Craven County Sheriff's office.

    An 85-year-old Craven County woman was killed and three people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 70 southeast of the James City area a little after 5 p.m. Saturday. Edna Hickman Hall of 4787 U.S. 70 East died from her injuries after her vehicle traveled onto U.S. 70 from Old Cherry Point Road about 5 miles from New Bern and was struck on the driver's side by a westbound vehicle, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
