Brunswick's Will Shaughnessy blistered the 3.1-mile trail course in 16:47 to win the 40-runner boys race, while Boothbay's Faith Blethen prevailed in the 28-runner girls race in 20:46.

    Despite a rainy start to the day, droves of swimmers and their attendants in kayaks or paddle boards took the plunge into West Penobscot Bay on Aug. 12, making their way from Northport to Islesboro in the sixth annual LifeFlight of Maine Islesboro Crossing. LifeFlight's Director of Communications Melissa Arndt said that nearly 140 individuals swam in this year's event, which seeks to raise funds for equipment and emergency rescue services that LifeFlight provides.

    Open water swimmers and LifeFlight supporters from across Maine and beyond have been working tirelessly over the last few weeks, not only preparing to swim three miles across Penobscot Bay, but also raising much needed funds to help LifeFlight purchase two new helicopters to replace its oldest models, which were put into service back in 2004. In its sixth year, the Islesboro Crossing for LifeFlight, a 5k swim from Northport to Islesboro, filled to capacity just a few days after registration opened in February.

    Due to the inclement weather, the start of the 42nd Annual Great Schooner Race from Islesboro to Rockland has been delayed July 6. According to Marti Mayne, events manager for the Maine Windjammer Association, the race was to have begun at 11 a.m.; however, due to the rain and threat of thunderstorms, the start has been pushed back until 1 p.m.
