    When the Hamilton County Highway Department was awarded on Dec. 11 $797,028 for Phase III of its Fuel Management Consolidation Project, it was less than what the department had applied for when it submitted its application to Round IV of the Regional Economic Development initiative. Highway Superintendent Tracy Eldridge spoke to county supervisors about how he hopes to bridge the gap between what was received and what was requested at a meeting of the Public Works Committee Monday, Dec. 29. Eldridge said the amount requested was $1 million, which would have required the county and its partners to come up with a 10 percent match of $100,000.

    A new approach to regional recreational planning will be launched next week, much to the delight of Bill Farber, chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors. Farber is a proponent of the "Great South Woods" initiative to attract more outdoor users to the southern third of the Adirondack Park, including all of Hamilton County south of State Route 28. The initiative begins with a public meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Lake Pleasant Central School on Elm Lake Road here.
