    West Hills College Coalinga will begin awarding a $1,000 scholarship each year to a student majoring in agriculture in honor of deceased local farmer Howard Mouren. Mouren, whose family history in the area dates back to 1860 when his grandparents ran a hotel in Huron, died in November at 92. Mouren, who worked with his brother Bill, farmed grapes, almonds and pistachios and owned a feed lot in Coalinga.

    The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review draft environmental documents for the proposed renewal of San Luis Unit Central Valley Project interim renewal contracts for the Cities of Avenal, Coalinga, and Huron and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Interim renewal contracts are undertaken under the authority of the Central Valley Project Improvement Act to provide a bridge between the expiration of the original long-term water service contracts and long-term renewal of those contracts.

    A man who died in a solo-vehicle accident on Monday north of Huron has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner's Office as Joel Curtis, 28. The crash was reported around 6:25 a.m. Monday. For unknown reasons, Curtis' Chevrolet Impala veered off Mount Whitney Avenue about a mile east of Sonoma Avenue and crashed, the California Highway Patrol said.
