    According to a news release from the New Mexico State Police, Eulalio "Lalo" Martinez Rodriguez, 36, of Hurley, was riding his motorcycle outside of Hillsboro near Lake Valley, at about 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. According to their initial investigation, Rodriguez was traveling north on New Mexico State Road 27, when he failed to navigate the curve and lost control and crashed near mile marker 10. Rodriguez sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    After eating a hot lunch of pork chops, peas, baked spiced apples, bean salad and bread prepared in-house at their senior center, Gila seniors hammered HMS CEO Dan Otero and Chief Support Officer Edith Lee, asking lots of questions about the changes coming on July 1 when HMS takes over operation of the county's five senior centers. Otero and Lee were grilled by about 30 seniors who wanted to know why they couldn't continue to have their hot meals cooked at the Gila Senior Center, instead of trucked up from Silver City, as is the plan after July 1. HMS is taking over operation of the county's five senior centers at a time when the state is continually cutting funding to the program.

    Perhaps the biggest thing to happen to the town of Hurley this past year is that it has made strides toward becoming water-independent of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. Hurley is currently purchasing its water from Freeport but that won't last much longer since the contract is up in 2018. However, the town has acquired about half the funding it needs to build a water line from Silver City wells near the Grant County Airport to the town itself.
