    A new fiscal year has begun for the Center of Anna Maria Island, bringing requests for increased funding from the nonprofit to the island cities. The three mayors on Anna Maria Island met with center executive director Kristen Lessig and treasurer Jim Froeschle July 15 to discuss the nonprofit's plan for the new fiscal year that began July 1. During the meeting at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, the nonprofit requested support from the three island cities to total $60,000, an increase over the $32,500 paid by the cities for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

    Anna Maria city commissioners July 14 voted unanimously to implement a 60-day emergency moratorium on demolition or building permit requests for formula businesses - effective immediately. Commissioners discussed the need to control and regulate the encroachment of chain stores on the island in order to protect what is described in the adopted ordinance as "a non-commercialized 'Old Florida' atmosphere where there are virtually no national 'chain' type establishments."

    Road closures frustrated motorists July 5 when Gulf Drive in Bradenton Beach shut down for a crash, while Manatee Avenue in Holmes Beach at the Anna Maria Island Bridge closed for a vehicle that jumped the curb and became stuck on the bridge. At about 9:25 p.m., Sally Jane Robertson, 49, of Findlay, Ohio, walked with her husband across Gulf Drive North near Ninth Street North at a crosswalk where she was struck by a vehicle driven by Richard D. Freday, 55, of Canton, Ohio, according to the police report.
