    Barbara J. Matthews of Holland, a teacher-turned-entrepreneur, died Thursday in Astor House assisted living facility in Holland. She was 86. Mrs. Matthews co-owned and helped operate a family business, Simmons Nursery and Landscape Inc. in Holland, for 35 years, from 1960, when she and her late husband Melvin took over from her father, George H. Simmons, until 1995, when she retired and they sold it to their son, David Matthews.

    George L. Jeakle, a veteran wounded in Vietnam who started his own sign business in Toledo after a career in the industry, died Wednesday in his home in the Toledo suburb of Holland. He was 75. He had metastatic cancer, and though he was originally given six to nine months to live, fought the disease for more than four years, said Neil Jeakle, his son.

    Jack Herbert Ruth, a retired business owner, philanthropist, and vintage-car and ice-hockey enthusiast who was a Marine Corps veteran and father of 13 children, died Wednesday in Ohio Living Swan Creek senior community. He was 91. Mr. Ruth owned and operated the former Ruth Corporation, a steel tube and machinery business in Holland, from its inception in 1957 until 2009, when he closed it and retired.

    In the heated contest to win the hearts of area grocery shoppers, Meijer leaped to the forefront Thursday by announcing that its stores in Ohio and Michigan will immediately begin including beer and wine as part of the grocer's home delivery service. Keith Rothstein, Meijer group vice president of merchandise services, said the retailer has been hearing from customers since last year, when it began home delivery through a partnership with Shipt delivery service, that it should include beer and wine.
