    A man died and two more were injured in a fiery wreck Monday afternoon that shut down U.S. 321 North in northern Gaston County. A sport utility vehicle was experiencing a mechanical issue and traveling around 5 mph in a 65-mph zone near High Shoals when a tractor-trailer collided with the back of the vehicle, said Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Huffstickler.

    Thick smoke covers the northern part of Cleveland County, and it is even thicker at the entrance of South Mountains State Park where a wildfire rages on. As of Friday afternoon, the wildfire, which has been burning since Sunday, has grown to encompass 1,450 acres of the park - stretching from the High Shoals parking area, past the Chestnut Knob overlook - said, Charlie Peek, public information officer of N.C. State Parks.

State Parks public information officer Charlie Peek said.  "They feel like it isn't going to get any bigger, but I don't want to want to say it is under control or contained," Peek said. The access roads, normally used by park rangers, have helped to create fire lines to help slow the spread of the fire, but there is always a chance things could change, Peak added.
