    Water service to a portion of the village was shut off for a couple of hours this morning, but according to village mayor Janet M. Zando, the water was back on a little after 11 a.m. Department of Public Works supervisor Kieth Heames said there was a mechanical malfunction during the ongoing water project which resulted in the shut off of water in the hamlet of Herrings, to consumers along Route 3, Martin and Baron Avenues at about 9 a.m. today. W.D. Malone Trucking and Excavating of Hannibal is replacing water mains along Anderson Avenue, Riverside Drive and Baron Avenue.

    As the dissolution of the village of Herrings approaches, the mayor of Herrings met with Town of Champion officials and a representative of the state Department of State along with lawyers to finalize matters on March 20. Members of the group went through their checklists to ensure everything that needed to be done has been or will be completed before the dissolution date of March 31. The general consensus seemed to be that although there were loose ends to tie up, the transition should be a smooth one. “We're just crossing our T's and dotting our I's,” said town Supervisor Paul H. Smith.

    After years of discussion and studies on the matter, the dissolution of the village of Herrings will be complete March 31. The village Board of Trustees held its final monthly meeting Monday, talking about routine matters such as the annual spring cleanup and tying up loose ends to transfer matters into the hands of the town of Wilna. The Village Board decided to hold the annual spring cleanup early so residents would have this benefit which the town will not be providing.
