Nicole F. Vaisey, 26, pleaded guilty to the Superior Court Information charging her with two counts of the class B violent felony of second-degree kidnapping and faces 25 years in prison.

    State Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, has sponsored a bill that would give longer prison terms to those convicted of sexually abusing children. The proposed legislation, inspired by the case of the two Amish girls abducted from their family's roadside stand in front of their Heuvelton home by Stephen M. Howells II and Nicole F. Vaisey, both of Hermon, also would impose restrictions to prevent offenders from hiding their crimes in the future.

    Time and weather hindered St. Lawrence County volunteer firefighters Thursday afternoon as they struggled with a blaze that consumed a Russell home. Hermon Volunteer Fire Chief Christopher R. Stransky said the department responded to 891 County Route 21 sometime between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m., at a time when shifts are changing and getting manpower is difficult, which is why a half-dozen fire departments responded.

    The federal court trial date for a Hermon couple charged with sexually exploiting six girls - including two sisters from Heuvelton whom the pair is accused of kidnapping last August - has been changed for the fourth time, this time moved up a month. Stephen M. Howells II, 39, and Nicole F. Vaisey, 25, were most recently set to go to trial in U.S. District Court, Syracuse, on July 6, but Judge Glenn T. Suddaby ordered Thursday that the trial begin June 22. Court documents cite only “a conflict with the Court's calendar” as the reason for the change.
