    All seven candidates running in the Democratic special primary election for U.S. Senate are set to debate in Heflin on Saturday. Darrell Turner, chairman of the Cleburne Democratic Party and head organizer of the debate, said Tuesday that all the primary candidates had confirmed they'd attend the event, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in the Heflin Armory at 115 Evans St. The candidates are vying for the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions after he was confirmed to serve as U.S. attorney general.

    The Heflin City Council voted unanimously to close the Almon Street railroad crossing Tuesday night after holding a public hearing about the crossing. Miller said that only 350 vehicles traverse the crossing daily, it's in bad shape and no cross arms are present like the other crossings in Heflin.
