    Utz has gotten bigger by both organic growth and acquisitions after canceling a merger with rival Snyder's of Hanover in 2009. Utz Quality Foods Inc., the family-owned Hanover, Pa.-based potato-chip and snack-food company that's been growing like a well-fed teenager, has agreed to pay about $135 million, or $12 a share, for Golden Enterprises Inc., the publicly traded Birmingham, Ala.-based maker of Golden Flake chips and other snack products.

    A group that seeks to reunite lost Purple Hearts with service members or their descendants is embarking on an ambitious project: to return 100 such medals or certificates earned in World War I before the 100th anniversary next April of the United States' entry into the conflict. Zachariah Fike, of the Vermont-based Purple Hearts Reunited, began the project after noticing he had in his collection of memorabilia a total of exactly 100 Purple Hearts or equivalent lithographs awarded for injuries or deaths from the Great War.

    A coroner says the death in an accident of a veteran central Pennsylvania firefighter who was responding to a blaze was due to the crash rather than a heart condition. Sixty-eight-year-old Earl Shoemaker was driving the Hanover fire department's Air 46 unit when the truck went off the road and into a field March 12. The death was originally classified as a coronary event by the York County coroner's office, but a pathology team determined that it was due to trauma from the crash.
