    In approving a 2-cent increase in the county's real estate tax rate Thursday as part of a $52 million budget, Prince Edward County supervisors unanimously voted to level fund the county schools. The approved budget gives the division $8,317,182 in local funds, over $300,000 more than recommended by County Administrator Wade Bartlett but less than the $752,402 in additional local funds requested by the school board.

    A 18-year-old former Hampden-Sydney College student has been arrested and charged in connection to distribution of marijuana, weapons charges and numerous thefts at the college. Bradford Sprouse, of Chesterfield, has been charged with six felonies and three misdemeanors after being reportedly found in possession of "a large amount" of marijuana, prescription medication, over $6,000 in cash, numerous guns and ammunition, according H-SC Police Chief Scott S. Williams.

    Hampden-Sydney College won the 2016 Wells Fargo Ethics Bowl competition held Jan. 31-Feb. 1 on the campus of Hollins University near Roanoke. A program of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges , this year's event featured 16 student teams from independent colleges and universities deliberating case studies with ethical dilemmas related to "Ethics and Civic Responsibility."

According to Baker, "Wealthy, white men built the school conceptually - planning its layout, curriculum and more - and often receive all of the credit for founding H-SC.
