    Richmond County schools, governments and businesses are bracing as well as they can for Hurricane Irma - and it isn't as easy for them as making sure to have a pantry full of bread and bottled water. Officials of Richmond County Schools have reviewed emergency plans with individual principals and will be watching Irma closely during the weekend, spokeswoman Briana Goins said Friday.

    For the Daily Journal Strong storms sweeping across Richmond County Tuesday evening produced dime- and nickle-sized hail in Cordova, as well as smaller hail south of U.S. 74 Business in East Rockingham and Hamlet. There was also a tree reported to be on fire due to downed power lines in Hoffman, but no information was available at press time.

    Phillip John Graham, 28, had been a fugitive from the law following a road rage incident on Aug. 18 in which he cut off another vehicle, forcing it to come to a complete stop before getting out of his vehicle and firing at the victim's car several times with a handgun, according to a press release. Laurinburg Police later that day located Graham near Tara Village and while they were questioning him about the shooting, Graham fled on foot, the release stated.

Early birds began appearing around 7:30 a.m., with staff members guiding them to sit cross-legged along a shiny corridor, waiting for breakfast at 8 - chocolate doughnuts and milk - while in their rooms, teachers laid out "tell me about you" worksheets asking favorite colors, nicknames and ages.

Broad Ave., in the old Easter Seals building between Rick and Al's Carwash and Arron's. During the cleanup, editor William R. Toler found several gems including an autographed headshot of actor Dustin Hoffman - from when he was in Hamlet for the production of "Billy Bathgate" - and the resume of former reporter Mary Katharine Ham, who began her career at the Daily Journal before eventually moving on to be a contributor for FOX News and CNN.

    The discovery of a dead body led to the closure of Wiregrass Road for several hours Thursday morning, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff James E. Clemmons Jr. told the Daily Journal on Friday the body was that of 30-year-old Glen Joseph McRae.

    Police say 36-year-old Ricky Eugene Thomas, of Walnut Lane, was inside a Rosemont Avenue home in the Briarwood community when some type of altercation took place and he shot and wounded another man in the upper body around 3:45 a.m. Although the victim, whose name was not released, was barely able to communicate, investigators said he indicated that he been robbed after he had been shot. The victim was airlifted to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

James Thomas Griggs Jr., 45, of Wiregrass Rd, Rockingham, has been charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver 27 morphine pills and maintaining a vehicle to be used in keeping and selling morphine, arrest warrants show.
