    Heavy rains Saturday caused the collapse of about 15 feet of pavement on U.S. 58 near the Pittsylvania-Halifax County line, which could force the closure of the east-bound lane of the highway for up to a week. The first reports of problems with the highway came in around 8 p.m. Saturday from motorists who said flood waters were crossing over from the westbound to eastbound lanes, said Jay Craddock, a VDOT engineer in the Halifax residency office.

The teacher, Keith Wayne Arendall, was denied bond after being taken into custody at the Halifax County Adult Detention Center in Halifax. The alleged offense took place Aug. 16, according to the detention center's website.
