In a move we're not particularly fond of, the City of Alexandria has re-branded the northwest part of Old Town. A British General got the nod over thousands of black Alexandrians, and some whites too, who lived in Parker-Gray when it was a thriving place to live west of Washington Street. Comment?
Keen observers of historical markers in Groveton and Hybla Valley know that at one time, two airports - Beacon Field and Hybla Valley - were located along Route 1 in Southeast Fairfax County. Comment?
Just south of Old Town Alexandria, and sandwiched in between the Potomac River and Telegraph Road, lie the hills of Southeast Fairfax County. Dotting these wooded heights overlooking the historic seaport, the District of Columbia and parts of Maryland, are neighborhoods and bedroom communities such as Huntington, Belle Haven, Penn-Daw and Groveton. Category 2 is a bittersweet one for those who mourn the loss of historic homes. The house is gone, but considering how difficult it can be to preserve a physical connection to the past and get approval and funding for signage, this category is much appreciated. Comment?
If you are in the group that is waiting for the day when those words will be heard here in Southeast Fairfax County, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that after years of studies that led to nowhere, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation announced on Thursday night they recommend that this hard rail extension and other improvements take place. Comment?
In May 2012,I wrote about the Fairfax House, an historic home that lies on a commanding bluff overlooking Alexandria about a half-mile west of the Huntington Metro. Showing signs of neglect, the two-story house had a date with the same fate that took away many historic homes in Northern Virginia. Comment?
