A 41-year-old, undocumented Cuban man continued to be held in Mesa County jail Sunday on $10,000 bond after the Colorado State Patrol found equipment and materials used to make fraudulent credit cards in the car he was driving, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office reported. Suspicious driving behavior prompted a Colorado State trooper to stop and question Carlos Rodriguez Martinez as he was driving west through Mesa County on Interstate 70 last week. Comment?

Mesa County officials anticipated spending the weekend preparing a response to the recent protest of the contract award for the county's employee health care plan. The County Commission is to decide Monday on the protest by Rocky Mountain Health Plans, which contends the award of a $6.1 million contract to Anthem Inc. the commission granted earlier this month was made on the basis of faulty information, stemming in part from Anthem being allowed to refashion its bid. Grand Junction city councilors took a step toward the possibility of building a sprawling new $45 million events center next to Two Rivers Convention Center downtown, voting Wednesday evening to update a feasibility study on the project and conduct a parking analysis in the immediate area. "I'm a firm believer that the events center is the right next step for us to take in the downtown. Comment?
That was the conclusion reached by Segal Consulting, the Greenwood Village-based firm Mesa County hired in February to offer advice on the county's in-house medical, dental, vision, life and long-term insurance plans. The county had $7.69 million in medical claims and administrative fees and $675,000 in dental claims and administrative fees last year, plus $2.27 million in pharmacy expenses. Comment?
