The cause was complications from bladder cancer, said a stepson, Jed Berman. Mr. Drake's name did not carry the instant recognition of the Gershwin brothers, Irving Berlin, or Cole Porter, and his lyrics did not always sparkle with sophisticated wit or polish.

The research was led by Dr. Christopher DeGiorgio, of the University of California, Los Angeles, and included 24 people with epilepsy that could no longer be controlled using medications.
