    The Jefferson County Historical Society held its first winter-themed fundraiser, Fire & Ice at the Paddock Mansion, on Feb. 11. The event brought in close to 150 guests, many of whom had never been to the Paddock Mansion before. Passers-by were drawn to the sounds of chainsaws cutting into large blocks of ice on 228 Washington St. Scott Simmons of Copenhagen Carvers and fellow ice sculptor Curtis Constance of Gouverneur donated both their time and incredible skill by creating beautiful, lifelike carvings of a peacock, bears and fish.

    Village police on Tuesday charged Zachary A. Richardson, 28, Gouverneur, with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. Police charge that on Sunday at a North Gordon Street residence, Mr. Richardson engaged in a verbal argument with an unnamed individual before he allegedly punched the person with a closed fist several times about the arm, causing physical injury.
