The ruling not only pushes up Matassa's jury trial by nearly a month but means that Matassa and his co-defendant, Gonzales businessman Olin Berthelot, are headed toward separate trials. Berthelot's trial is set for March 13. Matassa and Berthelot were indicted in March with single counts of election bribery.

    A 34-year-old Gonzales man was arrested Thursday after officers found more than 150 images of pornography involving children during a search of the Baton Rouge home where he was staying at the time, according to a report from the state Attorney General's Office. Joey Michael Opperman, whose permanent address is listed as 41233 Shadow Creek, Gonzales, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Friday on 150 counts of pornography involving juveniles under 13, according to the arrest report.

    Ascension Parish government is proposing a $138.7 million budget for 2018 that officials say takes an aggressive stance on capital spending for roads and other infrastructure while cutting government operational spending by 2 percent from 2017. Overall the budget, which the Parish Council will consider at 6 p.m. Thursday in Gonzales, represents a 10.7 percent increase in expected spending between 2017 and 2018 on fairly conservative revenue estimate, which is expected to increase from $125.4 million this year to $138.7 million in 2018.
