    The fire began just after 3 p.m. on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in a small lot tucked between two houses on La Scherpa Ranch near the crest of Refugio Road in the eastern Santa Ynez Mountains. The circumstances were eerily similar to those during the 1955 Refugio Fire, which broke out on September 6, 1955, just a few feet from this fire.

Calle Real, just north of the highway, is also closed from El Capitan State Beach to Refugio Road as flames burn stretches of meadow next to the roadway.

    A 300- to 400-pound black bear was killed early Monday morning when it was hit by a big-rig truck while crossing northbound Highway 101 just north of Glen Annie Road, said The 6:30 a.m. collision didn't injure the driver, whose truck sustained minimal damage to its front bumper and needed to be towed away. Killed on impact, the "sizable" black bear came to rest in the center divider against the left lane, said Stevens.
