Both the Cape Fear and the Neuse saw flooding as a result of Hurricane Matthew in October, with the Neuse in particular reaching historic crests around Goldsboro and Kinston.

    A civilian employee with Fleet Readiness Center East at Cherry Point was killed Saturday when his car was rear-ended on his way home from work. Thomas Akers, 58, of Goldsboro, was driving east on the U.S. 70 bypass, 2.3 miles northeast of Goldsboro, when a driver attempted to pass him at 2:27 a.m. According to the Highway Patrol, the person attempting to pass failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of Akers' vehicle.
