Citing that their mission is to protect lives, property and the environment, the firefighters rejected what many homeowners groups have advocated for.

    From what Hazel Reese said, an apparent fireball struck a small metal awning over the back door of Barbara Hall's house on Scott Street, leaving an indentation about the size of a baseball. It's hard to believe but I've been writing news stories and taking pictures for 60 years, including 17 years on the promotional side of stock car racing.

    Two brothers from Glade Hill have been arrested and charged with felony grand larceny after they were connected to multiple thefts in Franklin County, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Employees at the Bojangles in Westlake found an open window at the restaurant at 5:50 a.m. May 21. Management reported that cash was missing from the business, the sheriff's office said.

    The vote was something of a formality, as last week supervisors decided against instituting a proposed tax increase, effectively settling on the lesser of the two budgets staff presented to them. Finance Director Vincent Copenhaver indicated that, as the end of the fiscal year nears, it appears the county will have carryover funds available for non-recurring expenses cut from the budget to keep tax rates flat.
