    Homeless residents of the County of Santa Clara have access to as many as 395 additional shelter beds starting this week, county officials said. Each year, the county's Cold Weather Shelter Program provides extra beds starting the Monday after Thanksgiving and ending March 31. The program offers 130 shelter beds at the Gilroy Armory, 125 beds at the North County Winter Shelter in Sunnyvale and up to 140 beds in 35 family housing units at the Ochoa Winter Family Shelter in Gilroy.

    Last week the Mountain View City Council approved a list of new actions to curb greenhouse gases, with the goal of eventually reducing the city's carbon emissions by 80 percent. In a 5-1 vote, with Councilman John Inks dissenting, council members approved a new environmental sustainability action plan consisting of more than 70 initiatives designed to lessen the city's carbon footprint.

    The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved on Tuesday a five-year program that will provide 360 more homeless shelter beds per year, county officials said. "Our ultimate goal, of course, is to provide permanent housing and services for our homeless population throughout the county," board president Dave Cortese said in a statement.
