    Paul Ayres with the State Fire Marshal's office said 62-year-old Sherri Hogue died in the fire and her husband, James Hogue, remains in critical condition at a Shreveport hospital. According to Assistant Fire Chief Justin Hankins, crews from Diana, Glenwood and East Mountain Volunteer Fire Departments along with the Gilmer Fire Department were called out to a structure fire on Highway 154 in Diana around 5 a.m. One person was killed and another flown to a hospital for treatment; however, authorities have not released their names or gender.

    Two East Texas men were sentenced to federal prison for drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston today. Quentin Leonta Brown, 40, of Gilmer, Texas, pleaded guilty on May 30, 2017, to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine and was sentenced to 144 months in federal prison on Sep. 26, 2017, by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield.

    An Upshur County jury returned a unanimous verdict awarding more than $1 million in settlement to two men injured in September 2014 when the vehicle they were in was struck by an on-duty Gilmer Police officer. The crash happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 271 and Texas Highway 154 when the officer did not yield the right of way to a vehicle occupied by Odis Gray Jr. and Terry Thomas.

    A Gilmer High School junior varsity baseball player who was injured during a JV game at Bullard on Friday night faces a "tough" recovery, but his injuries are not life-threatening, Gilmer ISD superintendent Rick Albritton said. The player, freshman Grant Couture, was airlifted to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after being struck in the mouth and nose area by an infield fly ball which he lost in the sun, said Gilmer High School assistant principal Jeff Hamilton, who witnessed the incident.

    A 41-year-old Gilmer man has been sentenced to federal prison following a lengthy investigation into a synthetic drug operation in the Eastern District of Texas. Jeremy Chad Tidwell pleaded guilty on Nov. 17, 2016, to conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States and was sentenced to five years months in federal prison Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.
