Chico >> On Monday, Chico will be the California Water Commission's first stop in a series of informational meetings on investing in water storage as part of Proposition 1. Several parties with diverging priorities on the issue are planning to attend the 5:30 p.m. meeting at the Chico Elks Lodge, 1705 Manzanita Place. State Sen. Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber, said it was important for people to attend and show there is local and statewide support for the long-planned Sites Reservoir near Maxwell in Colusa County and the Temperance Flat Dam on the San Joaquin River east of Fresno. Emphasizing the hardship that the slowdown at West Coast ports is having on California agriculture, several members of the state Legislature called on President Obama to intervene in the ongoing labor dispute between dockworkers and shippers that has crippled the movement of goods. In a news conference on the steps of the state Capitol last week, the lawmakers urged the president - who was in Silicon Valley for a cybersecurity summit that day - to invoke the Taft-Hartley Act, if necessary, to help the two sides reach an agreement in their nine-month-long contract negotiation.
