A "loud boom" rang out when lighting struck a cell tower behind the school during a thunder storm around 9:30 a.m. Pascagoula-Gautier School District Communications Director Debbie Anglin said after the strike, teachers reported smelling smoke so they moved the sixth grade students to the cafeteria in the fifth grade building as a precaution.

Hoggatt said officers were met with gunfire when they responded to a reported disturbance on Home of Grace Dr. sometime around 8 p.m. Hoggatt said the man, who has not been identified, continued to fire at police, and he was eventually shot and killed by officers.
